Sorrento Mesa, is a neighborhood located in the north-western part of San Diego, California, a part of San Diego county. Situated just east of the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and north of the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, Sorrento Mesa is a predominantly commercial and industrial area. It is actually considered a part of Sorrento Valley. Both Sorrento Mesa and Sorrento Valley are a part of the Mira Mesa Community Planning Area. Mesa generally means a large hill with a flat top and steep sides. So Sorrento Mesa comprises the higher parts of Sorrento Valley.

History of Sorrento Mesa, San Diego
The area was home to the Kumeyaay village of Ystagua (istawa in Kumeyaay). At first, the entire valley and mesa was known as Canada de la Soledad or Solitary Valley/Mountain. Later on in the 1800s, a European expedition renamed the area Sorrento Valley due to its resemblance to Sorrento, a coastal town in Naples, in southwestern Italy.
